Women in History Week

2013 AAUW Women in History Plans

We are looking for volunteers who would like to portray a woman for women’s history.  The dates for this school year are the last week of February and the first week of March. Time commitment can be anything from a morning to a couple of days–your choice. This is a lot of fun and as you can see the time commitment is not great.

We will supply you with a script, which you can modify to suit your personality, additional background material, costume help, and props. What you will need to do is learn the material and show up at the school at the time you have agreed to. What our members do in fill in the holes for those schools who are unable to find a volunteer for a role that the teachers want. The women that we are portraying this year are as follows:

Mary Anning (K-2) – fossil hunter who made three important discoveries

Dolley Madison (K-2) –  4th first lady know for her courage in saving a photograph of George Washington and other White House documents during wartime and for being a gracious hostess

Shari  Lewis (K-2) puppeteer — you may have seen her daughter Mallory with  puppet Lamb Chop at county fair

Amelia Earhart or Bessie Coleman (all) early aviators

Eleanor Roosevelt (3rd up) – First lady who changed the role of a first lady

Louise Boyd  (3 up) – California  woman who was an Arctic explorer

Julia Morgan (3 up) – Architect of  Hearst Castle  who also introduced reinforced concrete

Deborah Samson (5 or 4 and 5) – Revolutionary War Soldier

The women specifically for middle school are Queen Hatshepsut –woman pharaoh of Egypt (grade 6), Queen Elizabeth (grade 7), and Clara Barton and the Civil War (grade 8)  and Marie Tharp (pilot 6-8) — oceanographic cartographer  who will replace Louise Boyd in schools where she is selected.

If you are interested in portraying any of these women or are just interested in learning more about what is involved, please contact Kathy Van Slyke at nkvanslyke@verizon.net.   We will be setting up the schedule in December.
