Knowledge Bowl 2022

AAUW-Camarillo Knowledge Bowl

Knowledge Bowl, which was first held in 1964, was the idea of past AAUW president, Betty Rutherford.  The team from Hueneme High School was the first winner and was the first school to be added to the Betty Rutherford Perpetual Trophy.  Since that first match, numerous public and private high schools have participated in this program. See the full list of winning teams here.

During the competitions, students are asked questions on a variety of topics including geography, history, literature, math, science and current events.  The questions are researched and written by branch members, former Knowledge Bowl participants and members of the community using sources such as websites and text books.  Each round consists of two teams of four members competing against each other. Twenty-four toss-up questions are asked, with bonus questions going to the first team with the correct answers.

Awards are given the final evening of competitions.  The Betty Rutherford Perpetual Trophy is kept at the school of the first place team until the next competition.  Individual trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams are given for the schools to keep.  Each participate takes home a memento such as a silly pen with the AAUW logo of the program.

In March, 2020 the first two of three competition evenings were completed. Then the pandemic hit.  We originally thought we would need to postpone the final night of competitions for a couple of weeks.  But the decision was made to cancel this program.  Our 2021 program was cancelled as well due to virtual learning.

Eleven schools participated in the 58th Knowledge Bowl held in March, 2022.

The winners were:

  • First place: Buena High School
  • Second place: Newbury Park High School
  • Third place: Pacifica High School
